(15 pairings) theme #12: love/hate relationship
Title: futile
Pairing: Kain/Rosa
Rating: G
Word Count: 179
Disclaimer: No part of FFIV belongs to me. All hail Squaresoft.
Note: I've taken the liberty of redefining love/hate relationship for the purpose of this fic. My application of it is more like highly polarised unrequited love. Nobody shoot me.

* * *

The two of you have been left alone. You have not touched her. She is weeping again, quietly, so that she will not be heard and mocked. You stand in the corner, watching her. She does not look at you. For that, you are glad. Whenever she does look at you, her eyes stab you with reproach.

She trusted you because he trusted you. In betraying him, you betrayed her, and though the one seemed unavoidable, the other... the other, you would give anything to change.

She is not yours, though you keep her.

She will never be yours, however long you hold her.

Any chance you thought you might have is gone now, without question, and though you love her enough that having her this way is better than seeing her with another, you do not love her enough to release her. Not now. Not while you have yet to gain the trust of the one whom your actions serve.

She will never understand why you have done what you have. You will never be able to explain.

I'm glad you liked it. :D

I seldom write in second person, but I thought I'd try it, and there are few enough people involved that I didn't have to use names at all, which is always fun. I like the effect of second person sometimes, but the things I want to write are not usually suited by that effect.

I have to admit, I find Rosa one of the hardest characters to get inside, possibly because she's the protagonist's love interest and gets kidnapped/rescued (I'm typing through my hat, by the way; I haven't thought this through at all). She never really captured my interest the way a lot of the others did, though I must stress that I think all the characters are awesome and legendary because FFIV is an awesome and legendary game. :P Rosa's actions are never puzzling, so I haven't thought about her as much. And this, of course, was written before the other. I'm not sure the two Rosas are the same person, actually, and you've prompted me to give her more consideration.

I've got a fic planned that involves Rosa and Cecil's wedding, though it'll almost certainly be from Rydia's PoV; I think Rosa might change even more in my head by then, so you might be interested when it gets posted. But it probably won't be written for a while. ^_^'>

DiD = Damsel-in-Distress

Yes, second person can be problematic if there are too many people, but here it's pretty obvious if you played the game who these characters are. You used it well. :)

I imagine Rosa's hard to get into because she's supposed to be the "ideal classy lady and noblewoman," meaning her personality is one that's far more fantasy than reality. When you say you're not sure if the two Rosas are the same person, you mean in terms of your writing, right?

Hmm, maybe I'll check it out. The maybe comes from how I've gotten regarding Rydia. I like Rosa a lot, and I've gone on internet searches for art and stories about her numerous times. What I come away with most of the time is an endless swarm of Rydia, and maybe a couple things of Rosa. When I say endless, I mean literally at every turn she's practically all I see. It's not that alone. On regular searches for forum posts and the like, I've found multiple comments where people badmouth her (often while talking up Rydia), saying she's "weak" or saying she looks like a slut, and people immediately taking as fact someone claim that Rosa once dated Kain but dumped him for Cecil (next part is key) because Cecil is supposedly a higher rank and Rosa only cares about whoever has more power. It's a bit understandable when the character is really popular, but.. this is Rosa. She's getting shafted both ways. At this point, I seriously can't enjoy things that center on Rydia, it makes me think of how Rosa will never get that. It makes me think of how most people will always see her as this empty shell of a character all because they have someone like Aeris as their first impression of what a character in Rosa's role is like, combined with how much more unique Rydia seems.

Not that there's anything wrong with Rydia, she's a good character in her own right, but... Rosa is too. And instead, all most people will ever know her for are her flaws and her relationship to Cecil. All the while, I'll have to watch fans (and now Square-Enix, since they cater to what's popular) hoist Rydia up on a higher and higher pedestal.

Sorry, I get into rant mode when that issue comes up. The character means a lot to me.

Ah, I see.

Thank you. :D

Yes, in terms of my writing. It'll probably take me another try or seven to settle on what to make of her.

Don't apologise! I haven't been involved with the fandom as such - meaning the people involved, rather than just the appreciation of the game - very much at all, so I haven't really witnessed the things you mention. Except, of course, that there's a lot more Rydia fan art than there is Rosa, and in my case it's because I find Rydia way more fun to draw. The hair, you know? :P I've never thought of Rosa as a weak character; she's a kickass archer, which always made me happy, and there's no indication that she's anything but strong in character. I've never heard the fanon about her, and that sort of astonishes me. Honestly, I have them all on pedestals - I really shy away from sordidity in relation to any of the characters, which is maybe why it's a good thing I'm not around to hear all the relationship gossip. I can see that that would be really maddening for you.

I hope you'll end up checking out my eventual fic anyway... you've made me really want to think about Rosa a lot more, and I hope it won't be as Rydia-centric, despite the PoV and theme, as you fear.

I feel a little better knowing how you feel about the characters. :) Maybe it depends on where I look? Most of the negative comments I found were through a Google search, uncovered on forums, but people on LJ have been pretty open-minded.

I can see where you come from on her being more fun to draw. She IS unique in design and traits, and people get more interested in what stands out. Most of the argument people use about Rosa being weak is how you need to cure her Desert Fever and how you have to get her back after she's kidnapped, they usually only pay attention to those moments and never think about the gaps of the game or look at scenes from a different angle. There's also one rant I found someone (under the Rydia pseudonym) made about Rosa, but the entire purpose of that site is to have ridiculous rants about characters, so I don't count that one as actual badmouthing toward her.

If nothing else, I'll at LEAST take a glance at the story. Whoever becomes the character of focus, I expect it to turn out great! :)

Aw, thank you! ^_^ I'm glad you stopped by. I've really been enjoying this.

I've never heard anyone say THAT to me before outright, about simple conversation, so thanks I guess. :) I've enjoyed talking to you too.

Well, you're welcome. Usually when people comment on stuff here, it's either people I'm already friends with, or strangers with whom I can exchange a comment or two, but that's mainly it. It's nice when there can be a whole conversation with a complete stranger. ^_^

Wanted to add that I know all that sounds pathetic of me, and it is. I'm not going out of my way to avoid things with Rydia in them, it's not like Compilation of FF7 where I boycott something I don't agree with, this is a case where I've just seen so MUCH of Rydia that my view of seeing things that are mostly about her went from "hey cool" to "okay" to "...".

No, no, not at all! I completely get your frustration.
