(15 pairings) theme #11: mind games
Title: captive
Pairing: Golbez/Rosa
Rating: G
Word Count: 762
Disclaimer: No part of FFIV belongs to me. All hail Squaresoft.
Note: I've taken liberties with Rosa's captured state. I can't believe they'd just have her sitting out in the open tied to a chair the whole time.

She always heard him coming well before he arrived. The heavy-booted footsteps on the stone stairs reverberated through her cell, causing dread to rise up and try to suffocate her. For as long as she had been his prisoner, she had never yet managed to completely quell the involuntary reaction; her pride, though, helped her conceal her fear. Did he realise anyway, she wondered this time, as the footsteps approached her cell.

The torchlight was cut off by his towering bulk. His voice was as dark and inscrutable as his figure as he greeted her.

“Golbez.” She refused to give him the satisfaction of anything less than courtesy. Spite would do nothing to free her.

She was startled by a metallic click, and the sound of the iron bars swinging inward. He was entering her cell. Something must have happened, she thought. He had not entered her cell since the day she had been taken captive, when he had fastened her shackles himself. The one who brought her food was Kain – Kain, who would never quite meet her eyes, and to whom she refused to speak.

Golbez approached where she sat on the narrow bed. She had freedom of movement between it and the single hard chair, but her chains would not allow her to pass more than halfway along the cell toward the bars. He stopped a few feet away from her.

“Your Cecil is coming,” he said without preamble. “Does that please you?” She stared up at his visor, trying vainly to guess at the expression behind the blank eye-slits. His voice had an odd sound to it; or had she imagined it in her joy?

“Yes,” she replied, glad that her own voice was steady.

“And I shall obtain the Crystal of Earth; does this also please you?” There was definitely something in his tone this time, something not quite human. It made her want to draw as far away from him as she could. With an effort, she stayed where she was.

“No,” she replied stiffly. “Why do you question me when you know what my answers will be?” He gave a faint black chuckle at that.

“What if I were to say it was for the sake of hearing your voice?” She turned her face away disdainfully.

“I would say that this is a strange time to begin to make sport of me.” He took another step toward her, and she stiffened, though she would not look at him.

“You fear me.” He sounded amused. She did look at him then, but only to glare.

“Again, you know the answer. Be satisfied and keep your distance.” Oh, she had not meant to say so much. His presence was intensely unnerving. This close, she could hear him breathing; every fibre of her remembered the inhuman colour his voice had earlier possessed, and dreaded its return. If he spoke so again she would shrink from him, dignity or no.

His next words, however, were spoken in that same amused tone. “’Keep my distance’? What will you do, mage, if I do not keep my distance?” Deliberately, he knelt on the stone before her so that his visor was level with her face. “By what means can you retaliate? I have bound you with cold iron.” His mockery was dishearteningly pointed. She had no response.

Then, astonishingly, he removed his helm. She gasped. Black hair fell wildly about a strongly featured face, but she saw only his eyes. The expression in them seemed a mix of tenderness and madness, and it terrified her so that she found words.

“If you touch me, you will answer to Cecil,” she declared, and it galled her that her voice shook. He regarded her thoughtfully for a moment. A small smile grew behind his eyes; almost it seemed to subsume the madness.

“Then I will answer to Cecil,” he said softly. She could only watch in shock as he leaned toward her and gently, so gently, pressed his lips to the corner of her mouth. He drew back and held her gaze for a few paralysed seconds. Then in a whirl of cloak he rose, replaced his helm, and left the cell.

As he secured the lock, he paused a moment, and said, “Your Cecil is coming, and I shall obtain the Earth Crystal. Be pleased, Rosa.”

Once again, his voice held that terrible inhuman quality. As his footsteps receded, she pressed herself into the corner of the wall, drew her knees to her chest, and began to weep, violently and soundlessly.

I feel like more could have been done with this situation, and it felt a little rough in one or two spots, but overall I think it was good. I could picture the setting and situation well. I agree with you, I doubt Rosa would have been left where you see her in the game the entire time, and I doubt they would leave her alone completely while she's in their clutches.

I'm a big Rosa fan and want to read the Rosa and Kain one too, but I have to go somewhere. I'll try to read THAT when I get back. Keep up the good work! :)

Thank you for your comment! :D I agree with you about the roughness - I see it, but I don't know how to fix it. As for more being done with it... well, when you read the Rosa/Kain one you'll see I tend toward vignettes. ^_^'> It takes a lot to get me to really flesh something out. I actually like that this is no more than it is, but it's good to know how it struck you.

I hope you comment on the other fic, too, when you read it; I'd like to know what you think. It's a totally different style (and the situation was envisioned rather differently, since I wrote it first and with less detail).
salartasalarta on January 24th, 2008 04:48 am (UTC)
I'm about to read the Rosa/Kain one! I'm similar to your approach toward vignette, but with short stories in general. I'm doing a story arc for Rosa that's several chapters long, and it's entirely new to me. I usually had my stories self-contained, and if they went beyond one chapter, I made sure I had all the chapters done before releasing them. So, I can understand your stance on it. :)
chibifrieza: rydiachibifrieza on January 24th, 2008 04:56 am (UTC)
It used to be that I had to be more or less dragged kicking and screaming over a thousand words... then my mage fic happened (the Black Mage/White Mage one) and somehow it turned into this monstrous thing that I couldn't post all at once. So while it was already broken up into scenes, I had to find a tidy way to break it up into actual chapters.

And I don't understand how people can write multi-chapter stories and publish them before they're done. I just... my brain doesn't work that way. I can't be certain I won't have to completely rewrite a chapter because I changed my mind about a tiny detail. (This is probably a weakness in my planning skills, but whatever, it's just a hobby. :P)
salartasalarta on January 24th, 2008 05:11 am (UTC)
I've had to rewrite the first chapter a little bit, in the beginning. Aside from planning ONE element about two or three chapters in advance, the rest is me more or less winging it. I'm worried I'll hit a spot where I think "well, go me, I screwed THAT up." I almost did at one point. I was writing a chapter and imagined it at mid-day, but in the previous chapter, I had established that it was late late afternoon going into nighttime. It's completely new to me, so I'm not expecting to do a bang-up job, but at least I'm doing it. And hey, it's not like anyone else is going to write a story arc this massive centered on Rosa. :P It happens for Rydia, not Rosa.
chibifrieza: rydia - oekakichibifrieza on January 24th, 2008 05:26 am (UTC)
Where've you been posting, mount_ordeals? I'd like to go read it.

Also, I'm pleased to be able to say that I don't completely ignore Rosa (though Rydia is my favourite, I'll admit); picture?

I've never drawn her face, though....
salartasalarta on January 24th, 2008 05:45 am (UTC)
Most of the things I've written about Rosa are there, including the story arc. The ones that aren't there... I'm not too proud of those these days. I think some of my earlier ones on mount_ordeals are a little odd in tone, but I think I've gotten better since then.

I saw the picture, but I wasn't 100% sure if that was Rosa or Porom. My first instinct was Rosa. I know Porom has that same hairstyle, and they're both white mages, and I didn't want to jump to the conclusion of it being Rosa.

I'm glad you don't completely ignore Rosa, and better, that you don't see her in a negative light. :)
chibifrieza: rydia - oekakichibifrieza on January 25th, 2008 04:58 am (UTC)
Cool. I'll have a look.

Does Porom ever learn Holy? I can't remember. Anyway, that's what the spell's supposed to be, though it's maybe not that well-executed. ^_^'>

On the other hand, my only FFIV-related icons are of Rydia.... :P
salartasalarta on January 25th, 2008 05:52 am (UTC)
I had to go away for a little bit, or I would've responded to this sooner!

According to a guide for the GBA version of the game, Porom learns Holy at level 52. I think all the characters with magic can learn all the spells if you spend enough time leveling them, with the exception of Cecil, for obvious reasons!

It's okay, my only icons other than this one are Rosa! But, I only have six total I can use.
chibifrieza: white mage - highfivechibifrieza on January 25th, 2008 11:56 pm (UTC)
No worries, I had to go home (where I have no Internets ;_;).

So she can, then. I forget what level she was at when they turned themselves to stone in my game (I've never played all the way through, as I tend to prefer watching people who are better than I am; my only attempt is not yet finished because I used to live with my brother but now he's gone away to do a PhD in engineering and he's got the SNES). I may have just forgotten, or maybe I hadn't leveled them high enough. Anyway... now I know that. Thanks. ^_^

My paid account is totally just for all the icons. :P Most of them, though, are not FFIV-related....
salartasalarta on January 26th, 2008 01:01 am (UTC)
Aww, I hope you can get an internet connection at home soon!

I had to look that up on GameFAQs to figure out what level Porom uses Holy.

Hey, when you have so many possible icons, it's expected that a lot would be of things other than FF4! I'm sure I would have some non-FF4 icons if I had a paid account.

I don't even have a computer, actually. :P If I lived with my parents I'd have access, because my dad's laptop has wireless, but I'm on my own right now, and since I can still log in on the university computers (even though my degree's finished, hoho ^_~), it's not really one of my priorities yet. I might want to see about it if I make it into JET and end up actually going to Japan, though.

Nicely done. ^_^

I think I started with mostly Dragon Ball Z.
salartasalarta on January 26th, 2008 01:13 am (UTC)
It sounds like you still have time then when it comes to getting a computer.

With a name like chibifrieza, I would expect that! :)
chibifrieza: frieza - helpchibifrieza on January 26th, 2008 01:42 am (UTC)
I'd leave at the end of July, so yeah. But I want to go to Anime North in May, and there'll be a lot of startup costs, as it were, involved in moving to Japan, so I probably won't have too much loose cash before I actually go. I'll have to see how things work out.

I guess so, yeah. ^_^ This here was my default icon for the longest time - second one I ever had.
chibifrieza: white mage - thunkchibifrieza on January 26th, 2008 06:17 am (UTC)
OH AND. I forgot about this. I'm not used to this comm taking up more than one page. ^_^'> So the other one was not the only Rosa pic I've got.

But I've still never drawn her face. Perhaps because I know I can't do it justice so I don't dare? :P
salartasalarta on January 26th, 2008 06:28 am (UTC)
It takes up only one page for me so far, maybe I'm looking at it wrong?

Hey, it would be at least SOMETHING of her. :P I constantly run into brick walls of Rydia, and then after her, Cecil or Kain (or sometimes any combination of those three together!). No matter how the face turns out, at least you're trying, and you can always improve!

I don't know how good you usually are at faces, but the face for Cecil in that picture looks alright by me. :) A little obscure because of how it's set up, but still alright.
chibifrieza: rydia - oekakichibifrieza on January 26th, 2008 06:39 am (UTC)
I think it only displays 20 entries to a page, so it should have the little "go earlier" link at the bottom, or something. There are three entries on the second (first? earlier, anyway) page.

Thanks. ^_^ It wasn't quite what I was aiming for, but I'm still not displeased with it. And yeah, unfortunately, I think the pencil was a little smudged before I even scanned it, and then Photobucket shrank it before I figured out how to change the maximum picture size. Oh, well. I'm out of practice, though, and I don't draw legendary beauty very well. ^_~ I don't really know why I haven't drawn her face yet. Probably has something to do with the fact that I'm far better at drapery. :P

salartasalarta on January 26th, 2008 06:48 am (UTC)
OH, I thought you meant to comments, not entries.

I don't know the issues that go into drawing, I can't do it, myself. I still say give it a shot. ;)
chibifrieza: rydiachibifrieza on January 26th, 2008 07:04 am (UTC)
My fault, for the ambiguous contraction of community. Sorry. ^_^

Heh, I probably will now. Especially since SQUARE HAS NOW RENDERED AMANO ART and it's freaking gorgeous, and now I know what she's actually wearing. I'm so excited for the remake. *_*
salartasalarta on January 27th, 2008 03:04 am (UTC)
I misread it as "communication" before, it makes more sense with community so I should have picked up on that!

I think Rosa could've been done without the rendering, I mean they did that EVERYWHAR with Rydia by using their imaginations, why not the same with Rosa? But yes, in theory it should be easier since they gave a definite look for her. I say in theory because there's plenty of details if you want to get into painstakingly drawing those. ;)
chibifrieza: rydiachibifrieza on January 28th, 2008 12:39 am (UTC)
Eh, whatever. :P

I think for me it's a modesty thing. I don't mind Rydia looking a tad scanty, but Rosa's tricky and I don't want to have her come out looking like... well... you know. That's probably another reason I've only drawn her from the back: cloaks are nice and safe. XD And yeah... the details are killer. I doubt I'll be attempting to reproduce them too closely; I don't generally have that kind of patience, or skill.
